Calls for management training as bosses start to retire

The retirement of the "baby boom" generation will leave a gap in middle management that will require younger employees to attend management training courses so they can step in to the gap, it has been claimed.

The problem is felt particularly keenly in Canada where a recent survey by Robert Half Technology revealed that more than a quarter of chief information officers said that providing adequate skills training is their greatest staffing challenge.

"We've had a military-based work practises over the last 50 years, with someone at the top leading the charge and all these people who report to them" Tammy Johns, senior-vice president in Workforce Strategy Manpower told the Financial Post.

"As a result, many companies have not invested in career management and development.

Mason Olds, Canon Canada's senior vice-president and general manager, has set up an internal executive training programme to provide employees with the opportunity to learn about all aspects of business, reports the news provider.

"My ultimate foal is I want someone who can replace me," said Mr Old.
