Business Contract Law: Olympics Construction Firms 'Sign Gagging Clauses'

The terms and conditions for businesses working on the London Olympics contain restrictions preventing them from disclosing information to the media, highlighting the importance of contract law training.

Included in the agreement is a provision for the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) to search the premises and records of any electronic communications if it suspects a firm of leaking data, a BBC report suggests.

Adrian Warner, the news provider's Olympics correspondent, claims a number of businesses have been "shocked" by the incorporation of these terms.

"Legal experts have told me these contracts are draconian," he asserts.

A spokesman for the ODA has denied the severity of the terms and supplied its standard contract to the source, which claims this differs from the version the other organisations had shown it.

He tells the BBC: "As with any company or public body, ODA contractors are required to sign a confidentiality agreement … this is standard practice."

In other news, the National Audit Office has called on the government to offer contract management training in order to improve efficiency in a number of its departments.
