Contract law: 'More training needed' on discriminatory job adverts

05 May 2009

More training is needed in the civil service to avoid discriminatory job adverts being published, experts say.

Experts in the human resources (HR) world have responded to a recent report from the Working Families charity, which found that 71 per cent of central government jobs are advertised as being full time, rather than having flexible working, Personnel Today reports.

Francesca Okosi, director of support operations at East Thames Housing Association and former HR director at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, said more training is needed in the civil service.

She told the source: "I think there should be more training for HR in terms of organisational development," adding that some education should focus on encouraging flexible recruitment approaches.

The comments are encouraged by Pat Campbell, head of equality at trade union PCS, who told Personnel Today that central government should reflect its own policies and training is needed.

A cabinet office spokeswoman told the source that while a quarter of civil service jobs are part-time or job share roles, there is more the department can do.

The comments come days after the equality bill was revealed, which intends to reduce the gender pay gap.ADNFCR-1303-ID-19152924-ADNFCR
