Employment law training: CIPD welcomes opt-out retention

01 May 2009

A leading organisation has welcomed the government's successful retention of its opt-out for the Working Time Directive, which could interest those with employment law training.

Mike Emmott, employee relations adviser at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), suggests that the move will still require companies to examine their working culture.

He suggests that businesses that require employees to put in long hours should be aware of the potential health risks that can create and its "corrosive effects on their health, relationships and performance".

Mr Emmott emphasises the fact that many workers believe that it is important to retain the opt-out and disagrees with making this practice illegal.

He congratulates the UK government and its allies for retaining the current employment law regarding maximum hours.

Last month, employment tax partner at KPMG Colin Ben-Nathan called for government to encourage more businesses to invest in training, which could include courses in law.ADNFCR-1303-ID-19150463-ADNFCR
