Employment law training: Shoesmith 'files complaint against dismissal'

10 March 2009

Contract law training has been highlighted by an employment tribunal claim placed against Haringey Council by a former employee.

Sharon Shoesmith, former children's services chief for the local authority, is challenging her dismissal following a report into the circumstances surrounding the Baby P case last year.

Ed Balls, children's secretary, suspended her on full pay on December 1st and she was then sacked without notice or compensation by the council, presenting an employment law issue.

Ms Shoesmith lost an internal appeal against the decision earlier this year and has filed her complaint alleging that she has been the victim of unfair dismissal.

Experts in employment law claim that she could be eligible for up to £173,000 if she is successful.

A spokesperson for Haringey Council states: "We will be contesting this vigorously."

In other news, Andrew Twineham, partner at Mincoff Jacksons, recently told People Bulletin that the three-step disciplinary and dismissal procedure is to be replaced by a revised Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service Code of Practice from April 6th.ADNFCR-1303-ID-19067373-ADNFCR
