Equality training emphasised in Acas guide
20 March 2009
A guide has highlighted the importance of equality training in the workplace and calls on employers to review and monitor their policies in this area.
The Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (Acas) recommends that companies focus on diversity issues in areas such as recruitment, pay and training.
Its key suggestion is the drawing up of an action plan, which should underpin the businesses' other efforts and provide direction.
Steve Williams, Acas' equality and diversity expert, claims that by implementing this, companies will be create a balanced and fair workplace, increasing performance.
He states: "To really get to grips with equality and diversity in the workplace can be a complicated topic."
Equality law training was recently in the news after the European court of justice referred the question of the compulsory retirement age to the UK high court.
The decision will be made about whether forcing workers to retire at the age of 65 serves a legitimate social policy or employment goal.
