Northern cities demonstrate strong employment growth

11 December 2007

Milton Keynes, Derby, Doncaster and Sunderland are among the cities demonstrating the best employment growth in the last ten years, Personnel Today reports.

A study from thinktank Centre for Cities found that employment grew especially markedly in these locales, providing more people with opportunities for contract law training.

Nevertheless, many northern cities still have lower employment rates than their counterparts in the south, suggesting there is still a north-south divide, but one that is slowly closing.

"These figures show that it's less 'grim up north'," said Centre for Cities director Dermot Finch.

"Cities like Warrington and Doncaster are on the up, but need to sustain this momentum over many years if they are going to catch up with the likes of York and Milton Keynes.

"Our biggest cities like Birmingham, Manchester and London are polarised within their own boundaries. They need to address the deep-rooted wealth inequalities on their own patch, by moving beyond constructing shiny new buildings, if they are to continue to grow."
