Tories would allow for more freedom in creating skills training
04 December 2007
The Conservative Party would give employers more freedom in developing skills training, such as contract law training, if it got into power.
Speaking to Personnel Today, Tory leader David Cameron said that employers would have more independence when creating training programmes in order to meet the vision set out in the Leitch review into skills.
He said that the government's own implementation of Leitch had been "slow and frustrating".
"There has been some progress, but it has been far too slow," he said.
"The frustration is that further education colleges cannot respond to local demand. Guidelines from the Learning and Skills Council mean they cannot rip up the rule book and provide what businesses want.
"We need much more independence for colleges and greater ability for businesses to get involved."
Separately, a report seen by the Financial Times suggests that there is a lack of skills in the creative and cultural sector in the UK.
