'Staff training essential in retail sector'

22 February 2008

Staff training is essential for medium-sized retailers keen to improve sales, a retail group has claimed.

Management employees from across the SVM group, which owns Replay, Sixty, Clockwork Orange and Tommy Hilfiger stores, took part in a year long training programme, reports the Derry Journal.

"As a company we feel this training now elevates our staff to a new level which prepares us to compete with multiple retailers in a professional and confident way," SVM area manager Ashleigh Keenan told the news provider.

The company is now one of the province's most structured retailers with confident and motivated staff, she added.

Donna Tierney, manager of Clockwork Orange in Londonderry, said the training has provided her with skills that would help with the running of the city centre store.

Meanwhile Frances O'Grady, deputy secretary general at the Trades Union Congress, recently claimed that employers often do not recognise the value of staff training.
