Dorset undertaking customer service training ahead of Olympic sailing

20 December 2007

Customer service training will play a part in the run-up to Weymouth and Portland hosting the sailing events of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012.

The Dorset Strategic Partnership has been charged with achieving a lasting legacy in the wake of these events, and Gary Fooks is the man in charge.

"The legacy for me is nothing about the sailing event," he said. "It's going to happen, but for me it's about what we can build around the sailing event. A mega-event like this will only come around once in a lifetime."

Mr Fooks explained that the Welcoming Our World (WOW) programme has £400,000 from the European Social Fund, which is being used to deploy free customer service training for all customer service industries.

"What we are doing is raising the quality to improve the visitor experience, so people want to come back here again," he said. "We want the wow factor, and people to realise that we have an absolutely fantastic county in terms of culture, arts, sport, natural beauty - everything to lift the experience."
