Employment law training: Firms 'must not grumble over legal changes to tips'

11 May 2009

A group is calling for organisations in the restaurant sector to stop complaining about changes to the minimum wage, highlighting employment law training.

The Institute of Employment Rights (IER) has criticised members of the hospitality industry for using tips to make up their serving staff's minimum wage, Onrec.com reports.

Carolyn Jones, director of the organisation, describes the existing limit as low and says reducing this further is unnecessary.

She states: "Employers have to stop looking to their short-term interests and think about the long-term economic implications of trying to cut what is already a low minimum wage."

According to the news provider, a spokesperson for ClickAJob states that failing to change employment law will harm restaurants, as these are reliant on the motivation and customer service provided by staff.

Earlier this month, employment relations minister Pat McFadden pledged that action would be taken to make this practice illegal, which could create a need for employment law training in this area.ADNFCR-1303-ID-19163754-ADNFCR
