Government unveils training and skills plan

16 November 2007

The government has announced plans for a major new investment programme to improve the skills and learning of the country's future workforce.

Over the next three years, more than £11 billion a year will be pumped into education, employment and training schemes for young people and adults, in an attempt to raise the UK's job prospects.

As part of the programme, there will be a major expansion to the apprenticeships system, with over £1 billion of funding to increase overall places from the current level of 250,000 to 400,000 by 2011.

It is hoped that training for a range of sectors, including customer service training and contract law training, will be improved as a result of the plan.

Ed Balls, secretary of state for children, schools and families, said: "We must maximise the skills and knowledge of our young people to compete in the global economy."

Some £90 million of funding will also be set aside for 30,000 additional apprenticeships, targeting adults over the age of 25 specifically.ADNFCR-1303-ID-18359297-ADNFCR
