'Bigger picture' painted with appraisals and effective performance management

11 September 2008

Effective performance management in an organisation will endow employees with an ability to chart their progress against "the bigger picture", claims one business specialist.

This entails senior managers conducting individual appraisals more than once a year, notes Chris Philips from Taleo, an international facilitator of talent management software.

According to the marketing director, periods of economic downturn are prime opportunities for learning and development, as "visibility" of internal opportunities and pro-active exposure to them can determine churn rates.

"There will always be an annual checkpoint where you look at things like compensation," he points out to HR Zone.

"But if you're only doing a performance review once a year, that's not very effective performance management."

A fundamental aspect, he suggests, is making sure clear, measurable goals are set to create "a line of sight" between personal and organisational goals.

"People want to know how they're progressing," he concludes.

Mr Philips' observations follow a report from global business-research body The Conference Board, which identified both effective performance management and customer care training as significant paths to gaining a competitive global advantage.ADNFCR-1303-ID-18774687-ADNFCR
