'Eight in ten employers fire staff on the spot'
28 April 2008
Eight in ten employers have fired staff on the spot without following procedures, an employment law firm has claimed.
Peninsula also surveyed 459 employees and found that 63 per cent had been subjected to treatment similar to that displayed by Alan Sugar on The Apprentice - dismissed without warning or an opportunity to defend themselves, Online Recruitment reports.
Deb Gibbons, head of employee relations at Peninsula, said: "I'm sure there is no doubt that Alan Sugar is a good employer but his leady by example on The Apprentice may be seen as a bad example and is something I would advise employers not to do."
Meanwhile, the Sunday Times recently reported that managers are increasing required to practise "soft skills" in their workplaces in order to lead and inspire their employees.
As the ability to relate well with others is now considered necessary to attract and retain staff several companies including Orange and accountancy firm Menzies have invested in management training schemes to improve these qualities in their leaders.
