'HR must adapt to retain talent'

24 April 2008

Human resources (HR) professionals must adapt to be able to cater for changing employment trends, a new report has argued.

After studying 5,000 HR professionals, UK-based think-tank the Adecco Institute concluded that the industry must adopt a new role if it is to successfully manage the talent of skilled workers as more opportunities arise for employees to work across the globe.

"This new role of HR management comes as a consequence of three trends converging: globalisation, demographic change and skills shortages," explained Donna Murphy, managing director at the Adecco Institute.

Whereas business success has traditionally relied on competing for customers it will increasingly become a matter of competing for qualified employees, she added.

Meanwhile, a survey carried out by Ashbridge business school found that HR professionals have a "major part to play" in the motivation and development of skilled managers, reports Personnel Today.

Skilled managers see investment in their development and training as being more important in terms of motivation than financial rewards, the survey revealed.
