'HR needs to consider all aspects of business'
02 April 2008
Human resources (HR) professionals must focus on all aspects of business during their work, an industry expert has said.
People Management reports that HR guru Dave Ulrich told delegates at the CIPD Scottish Conference to be well-rounded in their approach to business focusing on both strategic and administrative procedures.
"Most of us have access to senior management now; we are at the table. The question is what we talk about when we are there," he said.
"If we only talk about HR, we are missing the point. We have to talk about mergers and acquisitions, globalisation and customers - issues that affect HR and the business," Mr Ulrich added.
However, HR professionals do not have to carry all responsibility for promoting their cause as HR "touch" could come from line managers or other employees, he said.
Mr Ulrich's comments come as a report by Pricewaterhouse Coopers found that only 43 per cent of the 1,150 chief executives questioned by the company are satisfied with the ability of their HR department when it comes to competing for talent in the workplace, Personnel Today reports.
