'Look to HR' for leadership skills example
14 November 2008
Managers should look to their organisation's human resources (HR) department for inspiration when it comes to maximising the lessons of leadership skills training during the economic downturn.
In turn, the current "challenge" for HR professionals is to help senior managers comprehend the impact of their behaviour and set a positive example to staff, according to Georgina Corbett, group HR director at design and engineering consultancy the Scott Wilson Group.
"The HR challenge in many ways is to orchestrate the right people into the right place at the right time, plus recognise blind spots so you are able to do something about arising issues," she remarks to the People Bulletin.
"Situational leadership" should be strong, Ms Corbett adds, noting that the essentials for a growing business two years ago could differ considerably from current necessities.
On the subject of leadership and management skills training, she also notes that "great leaders" have innate enthusiasm and courage, while other required qualities "can be developed" through training and performance management initiatives.
International performance consulting firm dta Worldwide also recently underlined that effective leadership and communication skills training will enable managers to return "significantly better" results from their staff.
