'Managers not HR responsible for talent management'
04 March 2008
Managers must take responsibility for nurturing the talents of staff and not leave it to HR employees, the vice-president of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) has said.
Tim Miller, who is also director of people, property and assurance at Standard Chartered Bank, said the role of HR was to facilitate and support talent development, not to do it for line managers, reports People Management.
"If you try to do it through HR it will be a disaster," he said at a CIPD talent management conference.
"One thing we find is that if you have not got great managers, you are not going to develop talent properly. If you get your managers sorted out, everything else will follow," he continued.
Obtaining the right managers is central to successful talent management at Standard Chartered, which has 70,000 employees across the globe, he added.
Meanwhile, recent research released by Investors in People revealed that less than a third of UK employees have complete trust in their managers.
In addition, 55 per cent of employees were found to believe that their manager only has their best interests at heart when it suits them.
