'Stay sustainable' with management and leadership skills training
04 November 2008
Strong management and leadership skills are key to staying sustainable through ongoing economic turbulence, the chief operating officer at KPMG has affirmed.
Alan Downey, who is also chairman of the Institute of Business Consulting, maintains that facilitating the development of "personal capital" and transferable skills ranks higher in importance than being part of a large enterprise that "nurtures" individuals.
"For almost all organisations the question is: do you have the key people with the right qualities and attributes to take you through the difficult times?" he remarks to the Times.
Patrick Dunne, group communications director of private equity group 3i, adds that "star coaches" will come into their own during the downturn because they are driven by their capability to develop talent within their organisation.
UK companies have previously been urged to "show leadership" in the arena of both staff training and corporate rewards during the crunch.
At the Confederation of British Industry's annual dinner earlier this year, the body's president also reassured business bosses that the country's economy is strong enough to weather the current financial storm.
