'UK has world's most disengaged managers'

08 April 2008

UK managers are the least engaged with their workforces in the world, a survey has discovered.

According to a report by global consultancy BlessingWhite, 11 per cent of managers are planning to leave their jobs in the next 12 months compared to just six per cent in continental Europe, Management Today reports.

Furthermore, 40 per cent of managers said they are considering leaving their workplace.

The dissatisfaction of managers appears to be affecting employees as 22 per cent of workers surveyed - an estimated 6.4 million people - said they feel discontented and unproductive.

The UK was found to have the second most disengaged workforce in the world after China.

"At this time of economic uncertainty businesses need reliable and consistent leadership to inspire employees to achieve high performance," said Tom Barry, European managing director at BlessingWhite.

"If a manager is unhappy, disengaged and planning to leave, you can bet your bottom dollar that he is not doing his job particularly well," he added.

The news follows a poll by the Work Life Balance Centre and Coventry University, in which just 4.1 per cent of people found their managers inspirational, while 17.7 per cent said they were demotivating.
