'Unlock talents of all' with tailored training
04 June 2008
Facilitating innovative training tailored to suit employees' particular talents is a key way to reap business rewards, it has been suggested.
Launching a new report entitled Talent not Tokenism, representatives for the Trades Union Congress (TUC) emphasised that firms which employ a diverse workforce and "unlock the talents of all" benefit from higher productivity and fewer skills shortages.
"The need to unlock the talents of all - to create a truly representative workforce - is even more crucial at a time of economic uncertainty," remarked TUC general secretary Brendan Barber.
He added: "The issue is not whether business can afford to diversify, but whether it can afford not to."
In the report, issued in conjunction with the Confederation of British Industry, it is claimed that improved retention rates and lower recruitment costs are further benefits of training and performance management - as is better understanding of client requirements.
"It does not have to be hard work or legally complex either - simply [make] the effort to work out your precise needs," concluded CBI director general Richard Lambert.
Last month's Recruitment, Retention and Turnover Survey from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development also indicated that investing in training and staff development enables businesses to tap into the advantages of a diverse workforce, and thereby foster a "strong employer brand" to help attract key talent.
