Airline boss introduces performance management

Datuk Ser Idris Jala had a big job on his hands when he was charged with turning Malaysia Airlines back from the brink.
Speaking to the New Straits Times, the managing director said he was "strongly optimistic" about turning the airline around, and pointed out that he managed to get significant results quickly.
He said that, when he first joined, the airline was ailing and he set up labs where employees would gather and find solutions to the problems.
"It's like Hotel California," he said. "You can check out anytime but you can't leave, not until you resolve the problem."
He also revealed that a new performance management system was introduced last year. "We are fine-tuning the appraisal forms, introducing two-day training programmes for the supervisors and many more," he said.
The airline is attempting to foster a culture that recognises performance, and employees are rewarded with bonuses for good performance.
