Appraisal training should be reviewed for redundancies
29 May 2009
Companies should ensure they have sufficient appraisal training as the performance management tools should be used in any redundancy decisions, one expert states.
Mike Emmott, the employee relations adviser at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, told the Independent that businesses should use objective criteria when deciding who should be laid off, including appraisal records.
Dr Lea Brindle, an occupational psychologist who has helped big firms with redundancies, backed this up and said managers should assess redundancies based on performance.
"You focus on performance, you use structured interviewing techniques and psychometric testing," he added.
"Managers need to avoid prejudice, because the better they select, the stronger the workforce will be afterwards," the expert stated.
The advice follows comment from Lesley Maclou, partner at Harmers Workplace Lawyers, who said that performance management processes, like appraisal training, should be assessed now as many firms are facing unfair dismissal claims.
Companies should ensure that correct procedures are in place to minimise any potential legal issues.
GA Training offers public or in-house appraisal training which enables managers to handle staff appraisals with authority, fairness, confidence and objectivity every time.
