Barratt to reintroduce apprenticeship scheme
22 January 2008
Major housebuilding company Barratt will reintroduce an apprenticeship scheme, in the wake of losing many apprentices to its subcontractors.
Although the company had previously employed apprentices, many have gone to subcontractors, Personnel Today reports.
The new scheme is the brainchild of Jayne Mee, the company's new HR director, and it includes an apprenticeship scheme aimed at training recruits up to NVQ level 3 and putting them in managerial roles on-site.
The firm has also created a performance management system, and appraisals were initially held last August.
Said Mee: "We didn't have any of this before. Now it's a case of 'My manager is sitting down, talking to me about me'. It's a pleasant experience for our staff."
As well as this, a leadership development programme has been developed for senior managers, middle managers and staff with high potential.
