Coaching 'requires line management training'
15 April 2009
Line management training is important for companies as it allows coaching to be delivered effectively, an organisation asserts.
Dr John McGurk, learning, training and development adviser at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), says it is important that this practice becomes "business as normal" for firms.
He states: "A coaching style of management must be seen by top managers as a business issue rather than a learning and development department initiative."
Emphasising the importance of coaching and mentoring roles for companies, he says these must be taken into account in both design and support, as well as at a business strategy level.
The CIPD's Coaching at the Sharp End report examines the devolution of these roles to line managers and examines the way this can be fostered.
Earlier this month, chief executive of the Chartered Management Institute Ruth Spellman claimed that the lack of training in this area must be addressed.
