Communication training 'can help create well-loved boss'
16 January 2009
Communication training is among one expert's suggestions for how to be a well-loved boss.
Paul Facella, chief executive of Inside Management and a former executive at McDonald's Corporation, tells Sales and Marketing it is vital for a manager to build connections with their workforce.
Among the methods for achieving this is running an open door policy and talking with any member of staff who has issues, which he says were both applied with good effect at the fast-food chain.
Working alongside front-line staff in order to develop an understanding of employees' daily tasks is another area he suggests, as this can foster leadership skills through better understandings.
Mr Facella also recommends fostering a network of co-workers who can offer honest feedback and constructive criticism.
"Don't react and don't be defensive. Listen to what they have to say," he says.
In other news, Kris Dunn, vice president for human resources at SourceMedical, has told Workforce Management it is crucial subordinates are encouraged to offer feedback to their superiors, potentially through performance management training.
