News: Performance Management

Companies should assess performance management training

27 May 2009

Performance management training may be needed as many organisations' employee evaluation systems are failing the firms when they most need it, according to one consultancy firm.

Watson Wyatt says now is the time for businesses to refine these methods so they can work effectively in the recession, adding that many companies are overly rigid when they approach performance management.

Firms should look at much more than meeting targets or yearly goals and also assess how effectively they can manage their staff and difficult conversations with them.

Justin Grice, a senior reward consultant at Watson Wyatt, said: "You need to intelligently determine financial and non-financial delivery and balance this with behaviour in line with organisational values."

He added that this approach will renew the emphasis on performance management in a consistent way.

The company's advice follows comments from Lesley Maclou, partner at Harmers Workplace Lawyers, who yesterday said companies should audit their performance management systems.

When done correctly performance management will motivate staff and ensure that clear and achievable goals are set.
