Data-loss 'chaos' preventable with targeted training and skills development

30 August 2008

Training for senior leaders could help overcome the "chaos" caused by breaches of confidentiality through lost data files, it is claimed.

Adequate skills development decisions should be made by managers in such a way that all employees benefit from the leadership know-how of colleagues, adds Andrew Wilson, director of Aston Business School's multimedia interactive research institute.

"Inadequate training can lead to the loss of data and the more senior people are, the less likely they are to have hands-on experience," he remarks to Call Centre Focus.

"These senior members of staff might be the best candidates for training, because they should understand what their staff go through in their daily routines," he continues.

His comments come in the wake of the IT industry's slamming of the Home Office's "shambolic" loss of a USB stick containing unencrypted information on over 80,000 prisoners.

The stick had been in use by a management consultancy working for the government department.

According to Mr Wilson, such a data crisis is down to errors that can be avoided by training for improved competency and "better understanding of procedures".ADNFCR-1303-ID-18756753-ADNFCR
