Denham calls for training increase
02 January 2008
Skills secretary John Denham has called on employers to provide more skills training for its workers in an attempt to meet ambitious targets set for 2020.
Mr Denham revealed that to stimulate the economy and keep up with the emerging markets of China and India, employers would have to reach the targets set by Lord Leitch, Personnel Today reports.
As part of the plans to increase skills the government has already spent £11 billion on training regimes and will extend its current programmes.
"In 2007, we launched a substantial package of investment to realise Lord Leitchs vision of a partnership between the state, the employer and the individual, to create a country better able to compete at the highest level," he told the publication.
He continued: "In the coming year, I look forward to working with employers and providers to bring about the culture change we need to ensure this partnership works to its full potential."
