Effective training results in staff retention and 'good sales'
02 September 2008
Effective staff training makes employees feel motivated and "invested in", according to one set of retail specialists.
Lisa Titcomb and Liz Bennett from hand-made cosmetics firm Lush also singled out "good sales" as an outcome of managers' implementation of training.
"When people are trained to a high quality they feel invigorated, motivated and have a desire to do well," observed the duo.
"It can also result in better staff retention - if they feel valued, appreciated and invested in then they will want to stay," they added.
Retail director Ms Bennett noted that good training will not take place in "parrot fashion" but instead will feature ample interaction and make room for individuality.
Lush's creative team sold its first product to the Body Shop in 1978 and subsequently built a catalogue-based mail order cosmetics company.
The firm's representatives highlighted leadership skills as a main training focus in their retail business.
Fellow high-street store Phones 4u revealed earlier this year that it was to implement "experience-based training" to overhaul customer care as well as sales.
