Employers need to communicate on graduate needs

29 February 2008

Employers need to work harder to liaise with government and higher education institutions to ensure that graduates have the sort of skills they need, a key sector figure claimed this week.

Terence Perrin, the chair of the Association of Graduate Recruiters (AGR), stressed the importance of internships, training and better communication to ensuring that graduates are prepared to enter the workforce.

He told People Management: "The key thing is to ensure there is a dialogue between employers, higher education and careers services. Everyone needs to join in. There should be more opportunities, such as internships over the summer break."

Mr Perrin, who is also head of recruitment and resourcing for the Europe, Middle East and Africa region at JPMorgan, went on to stress the differences between today's older workers and those entering the job market for the first time.

"A number of organisations should be checking in with individuals to find out if they are meeting their aspirations," he stressed.

Earlier this month, the AGR's Winter Review predicted a 16.4 per cent increase in graduate vacancies for 2008.
