Government to put DCS's through leadership training
09 January 2009
The government has announced that social services chiefs will be undergoing management training in order to reduce the risk of a repeat of the Baby P case.
Concentrating on leadership skills, the directors will receive coaching and attend a residential summit.
Announced by secretary of state for children, schools and families Ed Balls, he claims it is also essential the future directors of children's services (DCS) departments bring a broader range of proficiencies to the job.
"I also want to make sure that all DCS's have the skills and experience they need to provide the dynamic leadership children's services need," he states.
Continuing, the secretary says he intends for all of the directors in these positions to take the courses eventually.
Mr Balls comments that the government must do more to value good leadership throughout the children's services.
According to a recent report by the National Audit Office, contract management training is an area government departments must make a higher priority.
