HR good at training others, at a price
08 May 2008
Human resources (HR) professionals have been told that they are ignoring their own career development.
The warning came from Peter Reilly, director of HR research and consultancy at the Institute for Employment Studies (IES), who said that the work the professionals do in training staff within organisations was commendable.
However he stated that as a result, their own career development is not paid as much attention as it should be, People Management Online reports.
Mr Reilly also called on bosses to address the problem and urged them to look at their own role and how the sector could be made more efficient.
"How are you getting your HR people to learn across different specialisms so they can become more useful to the organisation in the future?" he asked delegates at the PPMA annual conference in Brighton.
Mr Reilly also urged caution when using technology to improve HR efficiency, warning that staff may be forced to work around software systems as opposed to the other way round.
The IES is a research and consultancy service that works with companies across the UK.
