HR must generate learning culture

02 May 2008

Human resources (HR) professionals have been told to foster a "culture" of learning within their organisations.

The message came from Health and Safety Executive (HSE) chair Judith Hackett, who also called on the sector to make sure lessons are learnt from accidents and disasters within their companies.

Speaking at the HSE's major hazards conference last week, she urged the HR industry to encourage younger workers to learn from their older colleagues.

"One of the challenges for HR is to generate a culture that allows the learnings of the 50-somethings to transfer to new generations so they don't have to learn the hard way," Personnel Today reports Ms. Hackett as saying.

James Purnell, the work and pensions secretary echoed Ms Hackett's words and also encouraged companies to make sure staff are fully trained and committed in order to avoid potential disasters.

Annually, there are over 1.1 million work-related injuries and double that figure for illnesses exacerbated at work.
