HR professionals have a "major part" to play in talent retention

15 April 2008

Human resource (HR) professionals have a "major part to play" in the motivation and development of skilled managers, new research suggests.

A survey carried out by Ashbridge business school management found that skilled managers see investment in their development and training was more important in terms of motivation than financial reward, reports Personnel Today.

Fiona Dent, a co-author of the report, told the magazine that HR professionals must clearly understand which factors motivate employees.

"Through better communication within organisations, structured and well thought out succession planning, and relevant learning and development, HR has a major part to play," she said.

Levels of pay did not feature in the top five motivational factors listed by 800 managers questioned, according to the research.

This follows on from another recent survey which found that UK managers fail to motivate their workforces as well as managers from other countries.
