News: Performance Management

Happy employees are healthy employees

28 November 2007

Being happy in your job can improve your health, and training such as performance management training could help with this.

Research from Jobsite investigated the effects of being happy in the workplace, and found that happy employees were more likely to avoid fast food, take exercise and have sex with their partner, as well as smoke and drink less.

The researchers questioned workers at 20 commuter train stations and collected saliva samples on a work day and a leisure day to compare stress and immune levels, HR Director reports.

It was found that a bad day caused a third of adults to turn to alcohol, while 46 per cent said a bad day impacts their health and home life negatively.

As well as this, a bad day can cause stress, loss of sleep, headaches, exhaustion and depression.

Jobsite chief executive Keith Potts said: "Most jobs bring with them their own stresses and strains but this experiment really hits home the impact of having a good and bad day at work."

Employers can help to make their staff members' jobs more rewarding by offering in-house training.
