Leadership and management training: Right development investments needed for HR professionals
26 August 2008
A large proportion of human resources (HR) professionals lack confidence in the leaders of their organisations, according to the latest Global Leadership Forecast.
Furthermore, the bi-annual study - carried out by consultants at Development Dimensions International (DDI) - indicated that many such individuals feel there are "major shortfalls" in the leadership development opportunities at their workplace.
DDI's researchers questioned almost 1,500 HR professionals and over 12,000 leaders from 76 countries and found confidence in leaders worldwide to be at a ten-year-low.
"This deterioration of confidence is a sign that leaders aren't meeting the needs of the organisation," remarked Louis Liu, managing director for Greater China at DDI.
"Every business leader needs to take note of this if they want to grow their organisation," he added.
The study by the HR consulting firm suggested that leaders would like more opportunities to "learn on the job", but senior management seldom takes responsibility for making this happen.
Mr Liu concluded that great leadership does not happen by accident and urged managers to make the right development investments, thereby paving the way to achieve "different results than they're getting now".
