Leadership training 'must involve self-analysis'
28 January 2009
It is essential that leadership training is accompanied by self-analysis if managers are to be effective, an expert asserts.
Keith Pathing, a former director of the Cranfield School of Management, tells TrainingZone.co.uk successful leaders must look at their core values, motives and the perception of these by others.
He emphasises the importance of influencing rather than arguing when disagreements occur and effectively communicating those elements of an organisation's plans which correspond with the listener's own beliefs.
Mr Pathing states: "Poor leaders, however, rarely get very far. Leaders need people's respect and loyalty. People will only follow you if you show good leadership and this means understanding why people are prepared to do so."
He suggests people ignore advice on avoiding becoming involved in office politics, telling the news provider any form of influencing qualifies as this type of action.
Earlier this month, the government announced it would be putting all directors of children's services through leadership training courses in order to bring a broader range of proficiencies to the job.
