Line management training 'needed to keep workplace healthy'

17 February 2009

Line management training is the key to ensuring the workplace is healthy and productive, a leading organisation asserts.

Ben Willmott, senior public policy adviser for the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, claims coping with absence is one of the main skills these individuals must develop.

He identifies the importance of line management training so these individuals can identify the early warning signs of stress and deal with these effectively.

Mr Willmott asserts skills in these areas can lead to improvements in health and output in workplaces.

He states: "Good absence management does involve having in place the right systems and procedures to ensure absence levels and patterns are monitored, but it also involves training line managers."

The comments follow research produced by the Trades Union Congress which suggests one in four people performed their job in January despite feeling they were too ill to do so.

In the last 12 months, 57 per cent of employees have gone into work while they felt sick.ADNFCR-1303-ID-19031007-ADNFCR
