Line managers 'key to training success'
25 November 2008
A lack of coaching or mentoring and gaps in "line management buy-in" have been identified as some of the main stumbling blocks to successful staff training.
Research carried out at last week's World of Learning conference in Birmingham further singled out a lack of follow-up training and "measurement" as barriers to effective development strategies.
Andrew Gee, project manager for the conference, deemed the situation a "critical business learning issue".
"It is a constant battle for learning and development professionals to ensure that line managers place their staff's ongoing development as a high priority on a day-to-day level," he remarked.
News of the survey's outcome follows observations from Alison Church, Mr Gee's colleague, who told delegates in the Midlands it is currently more crucial than ever to invest in people and their development.
The senior conference and marketing manager noted that the "return benefits" of effective training initiatives will be felt at every level of an organisation.
Investing in training and development also nurtures "loyal and happy" staff, she concluded.
