Management training and opportunities 'key to exec development'

10 February 2009

In addition to management training, new executives need a combination of opportunities, challenges and responsibility, an expert asserts.

John Pope, a management consultant, tells HRzone.co.uk that short programmes concentrating on bringing these staff members up to speed are essential, allowing them to develop the knowledge and skills required to oversee their projects.

He says high level executives need to determine the objectives for these training initiatives, with advice from the human resources department also taken on board.

Advocating the identification of key traits each individual needs, Mr Pope states it is also important to give people the opportunity to apply the skills they have developed.

"Learning and development ought to be a continuous process, part of the philosophy of the organisation. Any significant event, meeting or success should end with a brief discussion of what has been learnt," he claims.

Keith Pathing, a former director of the Cranfield School of Management, recently told TrainingZone.co.uk that successful leaders must also be taught to analyse themselves.ADNFCR-1303-ID-19019015-ADNFCR
