Management training necessary to nurture leaders

02 June 2008

More management training would lead to greater consistency within the leadership of UK businesses, it has been suggested.

In a poll of human resource (HR) professionals and leaders carried out by business leadership consultancy DDI and the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), fewer than half of executives rated fellow leaders as 'very good' or 'excellent'.

A larger proportion of respondents granted that there is a lot "going right" in current performance management, despite the room for improvement in firms' leadership.

"HR professionals have a major role to play in helping leaders and senior managers realise the pivotal role they must play in proactively supporting leadership development activities," remarked Vanessa Robinson, organisation and resourcing adviser for the CIPD.

She added that the global leadership forecast had indicated UK organisations "could do better" overall when it comes to delivering outcomes from leadership development.

Representatives for DDI also noted that identifying future managers and taking steps to develop them is "essential" for the long-term health of any organisation.
