Managers 'uniquely able to motivate staff'
11 December 2008
A manager is in a unique position to motivate or demoralise people, it is claimed.
Jerry Osteryoung, a small business commentator and the director of outreach for the Jim Moran Institute, makes his comments to online resource Tallahassee.com.
He claims being responsible for staff development and happiness is a hugely important role.
"A good manager leads by praise and motivation. A bad manager leads by fear, and fear will not work in the long run. Fear creates a wall and precludes staff from taking risks," Mr Osteryoung continues.
His comments echo the remarks of management expert Martin Haworth last week.
In an article distributed by Ezine, Mr Haworth argued that developing management skills, perhaps through training, is an important way of maintaining the workplace happiness of people.
He called for managers to focus on building trust and maintaining communication, stating a good working environment makes teams more productive, as well as more loyal.
