North-east bosses to hone leadership and management know-how
30 June 2008
Developing the leadership and management skills of staff is a training priority for many employers in the north-east, it has been suggested.
Commenting on new plans by authorities to attract inward investment and more qualified professionals to the area, Teesside University's Ruth Helyer said employer-led training programmes are a necessity if the government is to meet its upskilling targets.
"There is a big thrust towards the engineering sector but companies are also saying they require more staff with leadership and management skills," she remarked to the Evening Gazette.
Ms Helyer, the head of workforce development at the university, went on to emphasise that British firms must possess "relevant, high-level skills" to compete in global markets.
The north-east's drive comes on the heels of a special ceremony held in York this month to recognise the improved maths and writing skills of employees in the area who took part in rigorous training initiatives which also encompassed customer service, team leading and management skills.
