Performance management in focus at CIPD conference

19 September 2008

Effective management training will create leaders who realise their role requires substantially more than simply "being smart", a human resources (HR) expert has claimed.

Particularly in times of financial turbulence, HR professionals must become "resonant" leaders, according to Annie McKee, a co-founder of US-based global consulting firm the Teleos Institute.

The People Bulletin reports on her appearance at this week's Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) annual conference and exhibition, which also featured HR directors from organisations including Asda, Google and BT.

Ms McKee deemed the collapses of Merrill Lynch and Lehman Brothers "exciting" as well as difficult, before outlining her philosophy that leaders affect others and effect change where necessary - "breaking through the barriers of bureaucracy" if they must.

Citing the importance of emotional intelligence in resonant leadership, she emphasised that understanding people is "common sense, but not common practice" in the world's workplaces.

"Being smart is no longer good enough," she continued, reiterating the importance of "seeing how your people feel about you and your ideas".

HR case studies covered at the conference, aimed at enabling people managers to identify where they can benefit from training and performance management, included the BBC, the Coca-Cola Company and financial group Prudential.ADNFCR-1303-ID-18787945-ADNFCR
