Performance management training 'must emphasise strong appraisal design'

01 June 2009

Performance management training must emphasise the importance of a well designed reward strategy, an expert asserts.

Philip Delves Broughton, writing for Management Today, claims that the pursuit of misguided goals can damage firms.

He states that the halcyon days for corporate target-setters could be coming to their end and highlights the importance of setting objectives that are more dynamic and responsive.

"Just as individuals reassess their goals every few months and years to match them to circumstances, so companies need to keep evaluating what it is they are trying to achieve," he asserts.

Mr Broughton writes that focusing on achieving a single objective can lead to employees neglecting other areas, which could be important for those undergoing performance management training.

Earlier this month, Watson Wyatt advised businesses to audit their appraisals system in order to ensure it is working correctly.

Senior reward consultant at the firm Justin Grice claimed that this could make the method more consistent.

When done correctly performance management will motivate staff and ensure that clear and achievable goals are set. GA's performance management training and appraisal skills course is available on a one day public basis in London or as a tailored in-house solution exclusively for your organisation and will ensure that there are no surprises during the appraisal process.ADNFCR-1303-ID-19197134-ADNFCR
