Performance management training 'should be department specific'
27 May 2009
Companies who want to overhaul their performance management system will need to asses each department individually, one expert stated.
Dan Woods, chief technology officer and editor of research firm Evolved Technologist, said many large companies struggle with visibility across the whole firm and advised performance management changes are made in each department.
He also suggested that modern performance management involves distilling strategic goals in specific targets, assessing performance against targets and reacting to problems which occur.
In larger companies, when assessing performance management, data and figures become important tools in decision making, the expert stated.
Mr Woods' strategy for performance management training and assessment is to formulate a long-term plan, monitor what is happening and work out how to optimise execution.
Companies were recently urged to audit their performance management by Lesley Maclou, partner at Harmers Workplace Lawyers.
He suggested businesses should ensure they have a water-tight system as the number of unfair dismissal cases increases.
