Scientists to receive management training

29 February 2008

The need for better management skills among scientists has resulted in the implementation of a week-long training course in Berlin.

Organisers of the course claim: " Lack of training frequently leads to frustration and large losses of time and money when scientists start their independent careers as group leaders."

The training week is part of EU-funded project TRAYSS PRIME which offers training workshops to young life science researchers.

Participants will learn basic skills in project management, management of intellectual property, exploitation of research results and acquisition of EU funding.

In addition, "soft" skill topics such as self management and conflict management will be covered.

The course will be taught by international experts from industry, consulting and management companies as well as EU funding experts.

Meanwhile, deputy secretary general of the Trades Union Congress Frances O'Grady has called for employers to allow more time for staff training and development.
