Scottish hotel owners reap training and development rewards

19 June 2008

Investing heavily in staff development and training has led a Scottish hospitality outlet to scoop a prestigious award.

Cullen Bay Hotel's owners told reporters at the Top Ten Employer Awards ceremony, organised by tourism charity Springboard Scotland, that both morale and turnover had benefited from the investment.

"We are all delighted at being recognised for all the hard efforts of both family and staff," said the establishment's Simon Tucker.

"As a family we have been keen since taking over in 2001 to invest heavily in staff development," he added.

"Staff morale is high and staff turnover has dramatically dropped all as a result of staff training and development."

Representatives for Springboard Scotland, which seeks to promote careers in tourism, hospitality, travel and leisure, noted that the tourism sector workforce across the Highlands and Islands is estimated to be in excess of 20,000 people.

In light of this, the training efforts of Cullen's owners make the hotel "a great place to work" as well as visit, they observed.

The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development emphasises that continual training and performance management maximises and maintains employers' ability to find and hold on to the right staff.ADNFCR-1303-ID-18645839-ADNFCR
