Shell, BP and Remploy among new Leitch signatories
11 January 2008
Shell, BP, Scottish & Southern Energy and Remploy are among those companies that have signed up to the Leitch skills pledge so far in 2008.
This commits the companies to support the training of their employees to attain a minimum Level Two qualification, Personnel Today reports.
So far 852 companies have signed up to this commitment, and government research indicates that nine out of ten believe that training has resulted in noticeable benefits.
Delphi Diesel Systems, Kwik-Fit, TUI Travel and Fujitsu Services are among the other firms that have signed up this year.
John Denham of the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills said: "I urge all other employers to follow suit. We have cut bureaucracy to make sure that colleges and training organisations can best meet employers' needs, and I am committed to extending formal accreditation to employers' in-house training programmes.
"Having visited companies across the country, I know that high-quality training makes a real difference - to the commitment and creativity of staff, to increased productivity and ultimately to the bottom line."
The government-commissioned Leitch Review has set an objective of 95 per cent of adults achieving literacy and numeracy skills by 2020.
